Book reviewed in Ambit

A review of the translation has appeared in Ambit, Issue 203 (Winter 2011), contributed by the novelist, critic, poet and cultural historian Paul Binding. Discussing the literary influences on Brines, Binding comments: 'Perhaps the greatest influence on him ... was the later Nobel laureate Vicente Aleixandre ... living the life of an 'Inner Immigrant' in Franco's Spain, and portraying humankind as exiles on earth whose paradisiacal expectations could never be realised. From Aleixandre come too Brines's flowing lines pursuing pictures of existence that float towards but elude the domain of supra-temporal abstractions. These lines it has been the challenge of Steve Cranfield and Claudio Tedesco to match in our far more ground-based English ...' (p. 61).

Also in this issue of Ambit is a review by Donald Gardner of Hédi Kaddour's Treason, translated (2010) from the French into English by Marilyn Hacker. So, a good issue for translations.
