About the title artwork

Untitled fresco by Alain Roselló (1961-2005)

Before his untimely death, the Spanish artist and friend of Brines, Alain Roselló, had been working on a sequence of works inspired by Brines's poetry. These were intended to be an integral part of the book Of Purest Blue/De Purísimo Azul. Unfortunately, those of us involved in the Brines project, including Alain's partner Rufus Gunn, were unable to construe the artist's final intentions from the work-in-progress. The title artwork image is a detail from another work by Roselló that is closely linked to the ‘blue paintings’ that were a central focus of his last exhibition, 'Está creciendo el mar' (Wolfson College Oxford, 2003). This exhibition was also inspired by Brines and provided the initial stimulus for the translation project.

In the most recent (2006) edition of his collected poems Brines dedicated his poem 'El azul' 'To Alain Roselló and to Rufus Gunn'.
